Happy March 2008!

"I Spy 1973"

"I Spy 1973" is a guessing game of "Who's Who" in 1973.  All pictures are of long-time locals currently living in the Fraser Valley who are, or have been, active in our Chamber and community.  The first person to guess at least 9 out of 12 pictures correctly in the 2008 newsletters, will win $35.00 at the end of the year.

The State of the Forest – What Is Being Done?

We are all very aware of the damage that has resulted on our forest as a result of the Pine Bark Beetle infestation. Private and public entities are working to mitigate the damage and prepare to protect assets in case of a wildland fire. The Towns of Winter Park, Fraser and the East Grand Fire Protection District have completed their work with Anchor Point to complete a Community Wildfire Protection Plan.

There are projects on the ground including logging operations performed by private developers, Winter Park Resort, Homeowner Associations, Snow Mt Ranch, the Towns of Winter Park and Fraser, the Colorado State Forest Service, Denver Water Board and the US Forest Service. All the projects have the same basic goal- reduce fuel products (dead trees) and try to raise the health level of the forest in general.

The Chamber of Commerce supports all the efforts focused on the health of the forest. We also recognize that there are some negative effects that result especially while the projects are in progress. Disruption of trail use, smoke form slash burning, basic changes in the usual landscape all can make us feel that the changes are just too much to handle.

These changes are imperative to help protect our communities. There are many sources of information where you can go to get information for yourself and your customers. Be informed so that you can be more comfortable with the changes on our public lands.

Mountain Pine Beetle and The Grand County Open Burn Program
Grand County takes pride in our successful efforts to educate residents and visitors about the mountain pine beetle epidemic, critical fuels mitigation efforts and the necessary disposal of woody biomass.

Grand County, in cooperation with the Colorado State Forest Service, the United States Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and the local Fire Protection Districts has been spreading the importance of creating defensible space to protect our residential areas and our resources from wildland fire.

Many property owners are being proactive and are utilizing open burning to dispose of the woody debris resulting from fuels mitigation (tree clearing) projects around the County.

The Grand County Division of Natural Resources (DNR) has seen the number of permitted slash piles increase by over 1300% in the last 5 years.  DNR is spreading the knowledge about appropriate slash pile burning practices and timing burns to occur under appropriate weather conditions.

Under the guidance of Jennifer Murray, the Foreman of DNR, Grand County residents burned approximately 6,000 burn piles in 2007 with only a mere 4 incidences of non-compliance to the program.  This year the County is on track to oversee some 8,000 piles and will strive for even fewer incidences of non-compliance.

We will achieve this by continuing to educate the community, increasing communication by keeping daily open burning updates on the County website and by having DNR staff on call 7 days a week.

Veteran Chamber Staff Member Spencer Woolwine Makes Us Proud

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 26, 2008) – In what proved to be a historic day at Anderson Field, Occidental College defeated the University of Redlands 9-2 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action, marking the first time the Tigers defeated the Bulldogs during Head Coach Elliott Strankman’s tenure.

Occidental used the days of rain to refocus and it showed as the 11 men stepped to the plate in a first inning that included four hits, three hit batters and a walk. With the bases loaded, junior right fielder Spencer Woolwine sent an opposite field homerun over the right field wall to put the Tigers up 7-1.

Spencer Woolwine was a threat offensively and defensively today, connecting for a grand-slam with an outfield assist.  Click Here for rest of story.

1. Go West Summit:

If you are interested in receiving the lead database from this conference please let me know.

2.
Group Dine Around Program:
The Sales Council is partnering with Winter Park Resort to target International Student Groups. We are preparing an all inclusive program to include lodging, activities and a dine-around program. We are asking for an all inclusive breakfast price of $9/person and dinner Price of $15/person. The dine-around program is the selling piece we have been missing to attract these groups away from our competitors.
